Divino Nordheim Thüngersheim

Outstanding Vinothek in Franken

Upon the 2003 debut of this vinothek, the industry press buzzed with talk of a "jewel" and "one of the finest addresses when it comes to Franken wine." Things haven't changed since then. From the start, the DIVINO vinothek in the Lower Franconian town of Nordheim was and remains much more than a wine shop. It is a world of wine experience, with an unmistakable air of well-being.

It is a bright and open building with flowing transitions from inside to outside, generously designed with glass, natural stone and fine wood, covering 1,000 square meters. Visitors will find plentiful cozy corners to relax and enjoy the concept of the building: outstanding wines combined with a Mediterranean attitude toward life. The succinct motto here: "Leben im Weinklang," a wordplay roughly akin to "Life in drank-quility."

A large version of that same logo is hung up on the vinothek wall, well visible from afar. And indeed, the vinothek is a place where guests can approach wine in new, fresh ways, such as through the aroma counter, where the power of the nose is given full reign. The "Vinotheria," a wine bistro in the inner courtyard, offers a selection of small dishes that pair with wine, from veggie chips to regional, artisanally crafted cheese specialties and hearty meat-and-cheese boards and even Mediterranean-style panini and fresh cakes.

The wines are broken down into four distinct brands. The first three involve: lovely, young wines with a light and uncomplicated flow ("Juventa"); single vineyard wines with classic Franken varieties and a distinct terroir character ("Franconia"); and fine wines with an international style for demanding palates, such as the red wines with extended maturation in barrique ("Divino Großes Gewächs").

Exceptional products, often involving an unusual site or vinification method, are assigned to the "Charakter F" line — exemplified by the spontaneously fermented Silvaner. These specialized projects reflect Cellarmaster Ernst Braun and wine consultant Paul Glaser's efforts to encourage each wine to develop and reveal its own taste and individual scents.  The long list of awards includes a 2012 Winemaker of the Year citation from industry journal "Selection," 'Best Cooperative' for 2011 and 2013 and four Best-of-Gold victories from the Franconian Winegrowers Association, most recently in 2016.

There are also seminar and conference rooms, the peaceful winery grounds under the open sky, the extensively renovated Zehnthof Chapel — an outstanding rococo relic of art-historical value, with notable frescoes from Andreas Dahlweiner, ca. 1755 — as well as numerous events throughout the year, such as the quarterly art exhibit, classic concerts and cabaret evenings. Every visit is sure to be an adventure. Or at least a slice of life in drank-quility.
